Women’s Basketball Drops Decision in OT Despite Miller’s Career-High Effort

Sophomore forward pulls down 20 boards in setback to Eagles

WASHINGTON (February 17, 2024) – Sophomore forward Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds and freshman guard Janyah Bohanon (Cleveland) came off the bench to score 14 points, but it was not enough as the Howard University women's basketball team fell, 70-64, in overtime to North Carolina Central (NCCU) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Burr Gymnasium.

The two played it close to the vest through the first 20 minutes with the Bison managing a 30-27 advantage at the half.

NCCU blitzed Howard, 23-11, in the third period to take a 50-41 lead after three quarters of play. But Howard rallied with a run (17-8) of its own and sent the game into an extra frame knotted at 58.

The difference was the Eagles knocking down both three pointers they attempted and connecting on all four of their attempts from the charity stripe in the extra period to pull out the win and sweep the season series.

Miller, who is the odds-on favorite for MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors, was a force for the Bison throughout the game, especially on the defensive end where she grabbed 14 defensive boards while adding two steals and two blocks to her night's work in 37 minutes of play.

Bohanon came off the bench to spark the Bison with three rebounds and two steals. Redshirt freshman guard Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) chipped in with 10 points as no other Howard player reached double figures.

In one of the few times this season, Howard (8-14, 5-3 MEAC) managed to outscore its counterparts off the bench, 35-16.

NCCU (12-11, 6-2 MEAC) was led by a balanced attack of Kyla Bryant (14 points), Morgan Callahan (12 points), Kimeira Burks (12 points), Janiah Jones (11 points off the bench) and Tippy Robertson (10 points & game-high six assists).

NEXT UP: Howard will look to regroup when it hosts South Carolina State Monday (Feb. 19) at 5:30 p.m., inside Burr Gymnasium.
