WASHINGTON (November 7, 2024) - Howard University women's soccer team continues to make history, defeating the fourth-seeded Stonehill (SHC) Skyhawks, 2-1, in the Northeast Conference (NEC) semifinal round Thursday afternoon.
The much-anticipated rematch lifted the Bison to a 10-4-5 overall record while Stonehill's season ends with a 8-10-1 mark.
Seeking vengeance for their only conference loss of the season, Howard came out strong, getting off two quick shots before senior
Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) connected with the back of the net at the five-minute mark. Her low goal opened the scoring, giving the Bison an "Earley" 1-0 lead.
Putting on the pressure, the Bison worked in six more attacks before Earley broke away to get a second ball around the Skyhawk in goal, 2-0.
With less than seven minutes to go, Stonehill joined the scoreboard with a grounder of its own, closing the gap, 2-1.
Battling to stay in the game, the Skyhawks attempted eight shots in the second half, compared to Howard's five, but failed to break through the Bison back line.
Five corner kicks fell short in the second half for Stonehill, thanks to Howard's defense.
Utilizing five corners, the Bison outshot SHC, 17-12, while putting eight on goal.
Facing 12 shots, two-time NEC Goalkeeper of the Year
Trinity Knox (Atlanta) added five saves to her career stats.
The Bison return to the pitch Sunday (Nov. 10) at noon when they host the winner of second-seeded Wagner and third-seeded FDU.
