WASHINGTON (November 10, 2024) - Howard University women's soccer team continued its historic season, defeating FDU, 2-1, Sunday afternoon for its first Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament title in program history.
Â
Battling it out on the field, both teams got three shots off in the first half, but the Bison's third time was the charm. With help from All-NEC Second Team selections seniors
Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) and
Zoe Moore (Lutz, Fla.), reigning NEC Midfielder of the Year
Samantha James (Herndon, Va.) beat the FDU keeper in a footrace to net the game's first goal, 1-0, with three minutes left in the period.
Â
Coming out of the half, a long shot to the top right corner of the goal made it an even score, 1-1.
Â
Aiming to regain the lead, senior
Kyra Bolden (McLean, Va.) charged to the net just 20 seconds later to garner a 2-1 advantage.
Â
The Knights outshot Howard, 10-7, but could not get by HU's back line, led by NEC Defensive Player of the Year
Rachel Suttle (Smyrna, Ga.) or the last line of defense conference Goalkeeper of the Year
Trinity Knox (Atlanta). Knox made three crucial saves in the feat, bringing her career total to 156.
Â
The Bison will find out their next opponent during the NCAA Selection Show Monday (Nov. 11) at 4 p.m. (ET).
