Awojobi, Volleyball Knock Off UMES

New York native secures double-double in the win over Hawks

WASHINGTON (November 3, 2024) – Senior outside hitter Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) led the Howard University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-16, 25-20) over Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Sunday afternoon inside The Burr.

The New York native filled the stat sheet, notching a double-double (12 kills & 11 digs) with four total blocks in the win.

Both squads were tied early on in game one, 9-9, but HU scored three consecutive points to create separation, 12-9. From there, the Bison never looked back and took a 1-0 match lead.

UMES held a slim advantage midway through set two, 11-10, but back-to-back kills from senior middle blocker Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) gave Howard the momentum back, 12-11. HU kept the pressure on after regaining the upper hand, producing a .345 hitting percentage in game two and taking a commanding 2-0 match lead.

Maryland Easten Shore refused to go away in game three, holding a 13-10 lead after three consecutive hitting errors. Howard fought back, going on a quick 5-1 run and taking a 15-14 advantage from Woodard's kill.

Midway through the set, both clubs were deadlocked at 15 apiece until HU scored six unanswered points, highlighted by a pair of service aces from second-year Bison Gabby Allen (Laurel, Md.), 21-15.

UMES battled, but graduate outside hitter Aziah Buckner (Memphis, Tenn.) closed the contest with a kill and service ace to secure Howard's 12 straight win.

Overall, the Bison registered a .320 hitting percentage with 45 total kills. Junior setter Leah Reeves (Allen, Texas) orchestrated the offensive with 38 assists.

Junior outside hitter Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) finished with nine kills, followed by Woodard and graduate middle blocker Amanda Ifeanyichukwu (The Woodlands, Texas) with eight kills apiece.

HU (18-5) extended its win streak to 12 while remaining unbeaten in conference play (11-0).

For UMES (8-13, 3-7 MEAC), Lilliana Montes had a team-leading six kills in the loss.

Howard is set to play Morgan State Friday (Nov. 8) at 6 p.m., on the road. Two days later (Nov. 10), the Lady Bison face Coppin State at 1 p.m., in Baltimore.
