Lakers Defeat Men’s Soccer on Senior Day

Bison fall short to Mercyhurst

WASHINGTON (November 3, 2024) – Howard University men's soccer team fell to Mercyhurst, 2-0, at Greene Stadium.
 
With the loss, HU was eliminated from the postseason play while dropping to 2-10-3 (2-4-1 NEC).
 
At the 29-minute mark, Mercyhurst (8-2-2, 5-1-2 NEC) got on the board with a goal from Cade Wurstner, 1-0.
 
Howard refused to go away, staying aggressive with three first half corner kicks. Despite the upper hand, HU trailed at intermission, 1-0.
 
After halftime, redshirt freshman goalie Liam Keiller (Gaithersburg, Md.) kept Howard's playoff hopes alive with four second half saves.
 
Mercyhurst put the contest out-of-reach in the waning moments with a goal from Dylan Sumner, 2-0.
 
Five different Bison took a shot in the loss: graduates Peter Gansallo (Bowie, Md.) and Jackson Lewis (Alexandria, Va.); sophomore Axel Chicas (Washington) and freshmen Kuba Cihak (Prague, Czech Republic) and Zach Simmons (Rockwall, Texas).
 
Before Sunday's match, Bison head coach Phillip Gyau and HU Department of Athletics recognized eight graduates and seniors for their hard work and dedication to the men's soccer program: Gansallo; J. Lewis; Bryson Baker (Ellicott City, Md.); Mason Christian (Fulton, Md.); Brandon Franklin (Glen Dale, Md.); Rameses Gaines (Oxon Hill, Md.); Marcus Lewis (Toronto, Canada) and Kwadwo Nyakro (Greater Accra, Ghana).
 
Thursday (Nov. 7), HU wraps up the regular season in the Windy City (Chicago) against Chicago State. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. (ET) / 7 p.m. (CT).
