GREENVILLE, N.C. (November 20, 2024) – Graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queen, N.Y.) scored a team-high 12 points, but a poor shooting performance downed the Howard University women's basketball team, falling, 65-44, to East Carolina University (ECU) in a nonconference game at Williams Arena at Minges.
It was the second straight game that the Bison suffered shooting woes. In the recent win over Mount Saint Mary's (Nov. 13), Howard scored only 39 points while shooting 20-percent.
On the game, the Bison shot a frigid 27-percent (17-of-61), including 4-of-27 from beyond the arc.
Howard (3-2) played the Pirates (3-2) close through the first quarter, trailing, 9-6, going into the second period. But the host began to put some distance between them and the visitors, opening a 28-19 lead at intermission.
Then, ECU essentially put the game away with an 11-0 run to start the third period.
Howell, the 2022-23 MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Player of the Year, made only 4-of-14 shots and was hampered by early foul trouble (four in the first half). The rest of the team missed 34-of-47 shots as no other Bison was able to step up.
The Pirates got an outstanding individual performance from Amina Joyner, who poured in a career-high 32 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
Howard junior forwards
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) chipped in with nine points and six rebounds and
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) added five rebounds, five steals, four points and a block in a losing cause.
The Pirates got 13 points from Jayla Harp and 11 points from Khia Miller.
NEXT UP: Howard looks to get back on the winning track when it hosts New Hampshire Saturday (Nov. 23) at 2 p.m., inside The Burr.
