EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 13, 2024) – Graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) was the only scorer to reach double figures, but her game-high 11 points were just enough to help the Howard University women's basketball team squeeze past Mount St. Mary's (MSM), 39-35, in a low-scoring affair at Knotts Arena.
The game was close throughout and featured long droughts with neither team able to get any consistency on offense.
Howell, the 2022-23 MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Player of the Year, uncharacteristically missed 15-of-19 attempts but she did well in her specialty, connecting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
After one, the score was tied at 15 apiece. Then, the Bison (3-1) were able to get some breathing room in the second quarter, outscoring the host, 12-4, to take a 26-19 advantage to the locker room.
The Mount (0-3) managed to keep it close and would not allow the Bison to extend the lead.
Howell got just enough support from teammates junior forwards
Zennia Thomas (six points & five rebounds) and
Nile Miller (six points) and freshman guard
Saniyah King (four points, three assists & two steals) to secure the victory.
On a night when the Bison shot only 27-percent from the field, they parlayed a combination of defense--holding MSM to 18-percent shooting--and a dominating effort on the glass, 50-31.
The Mount were led by Anna LeMaster with nine points and four rebounds, Tessa Engelmann (eight points) and Jaedyn Jamison with a game-high nine rebounds.
NEXT UP: Howard travels to Greenville, N.C., to take on the Pirates of East Carolina Wednesday (Nov. 20) at 11 a.m.
