WASHINGTON (November 10, 2024) - The Howard University women's basketball team got off to a slow start offensively and suffered through its worst shooting performances of the season, resulting into a 72-48 home loss to VCU in a nonconference game at Burr Gymnasium.
The loss was the first of the season for the Bison (2-1).
Howard graduates
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.), the team's leading scorer (21.5 points per game) through two games and her mate
Kaiya Creek (14 points per game) were combining for almost 40 points between them. But the visitors held them in check as they limited their offensive output, forcing them into 14 points between them on 6-of-22 shooting---including 0-4 from beyond the arc.
An individual on Howell, the New York native scored her 1,000
th point, needing four only points coming into the day. She now becomes the 26
th player in school history to reach that plateau. The 1,006 points moves her up to 25
th all-time in program history.
The Rams (2-0) took an 18-13 first quarter lead and then expanded it to a 37-26 advantage at the half. VCU then made sure that Howard would not make a run, outscoring the host, 21-12, while taking an insurmountable 57-34 lead at the end of three.
In addition to the offense from Howell and Creek, Howard had gotten solid performances from freshman
Saniyah King (Washington), who came into the game averaging almost 14 points while leading the team in both assists and steals. On the day, King finished with four points on 2-of-10 from the field.
One of the two bright spots for the Bison was junior
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland), a transfer forward from Kentucky, who just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. The other came from sophomore guard
Janyah Bohanon (Cleveland), who came off the Howard bench to score 10 points.
The Rams were led by Mary Anna-Asani, who led all scorers with 20 points and Timaya Lewis-Eutsey with 16 points.
NEXT UP: Howard travels to Emmitsburg, Md., to take on Mount Saint Mary's Wednesday (Nov. 13) at 6 p.m.
