Volleyball Continues Charge Through Conference Slate

Bison notch third straight conference sweep

WASHINGTON (October 4, 2024) - Howard University volleyball team posted their third straight conference victory with Friday night's 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-19) sweep over the Delaware State (DSU) Hornets inside Burr Gym.

The win moves the Bison to a 9-5 record (3-0 MEAC) and holds the top spot in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) while the Hornets fall to 5-10 (1-1 MEAC).

In the opening frame, fans saw even exchanges throughout the first 16 points until the Bison went on a 6-1 run for a 22-17 lead. A kill sandwiched by errors brought the Hornets within three points but the comeback fell short as duo Leah Reeves (Allen, Texas) and Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) closed the first set with two big kills, 25-20.

In game two, the Bison were first on the board, yet again, with a block from Reeves and Amanda Ifeanyichukwu (The Woodlands, Texas). The Hornets quickly jumped to a slight 4-2 advantage before back-to-back blocks from Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, NY) and Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) exchanged the lead, 6-4. Five uninterrupted points extended the lead, 16-9. Working to close the gap, DSU managed three consecutive points to shrink the deficit, 18-14. The Bison went on another 5-0 run to hang on the cusp of set point. Grad transfer Aziah Buckner (Memphis, Tenn.) sailed the last attack over the net for the biggest win of the night, 25-16.

HU jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the final frame. Delaware State inched their way to a two-point deficit but was cut short by another 5-0 run, highlighted by Reeves' consecutive aces, 15-8. DSU bounced back with a 6-1 surge, marking another two-point game, 16-14. Four more Bison worked attacks over the net, capped by an ace from Halie McGinest (Calabasas, Calif.) for a 25-19 finish.

The Bison are back in action Sunday, October 6 at 1 p.m., when they face the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on the road.
