Bison extend win streak to four

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (October 6, 2024) – Howard University women's volleyball team extended its win streak after a three-set sweep (25-16, 26-24, 25-20) at Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in Princess Anne, Md.

With the victory, HU (10-5) extended the streak to a season-high four while remaining unbeaten in league play (4-0).

Grad transfer outside hitter Aziah Buckner (Memphis, Tenn.) had her best all-around performance in a Bison uniform, recording a double-double (13 digs & 11 kills) with four service aces in the win.

UMES (5-9, 0-3 MEAC) held an early 6-5 advantage in the opening frame, but a Buckner kill and back-to-back service aces from senior outside hitter Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) gave HU an 8-6 edge. From there, the Bison never looked back and took a 1-0 match lead.

Howard grabbed a slim lead early in game two until UMES went on a quick 4-0 spurt, taking a 13-10 advantage midway through the set. HU clawed its way back, going on a 7-2 run to reclaim the upper hand, 17-15, but the Hawks refused to go away.

Two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) gave the Bison set point with a kill, 24-21, but Maryland Eastern Shore scored three unanswered points to tie the game, 24-24. After an UMES service error, Awojobi closed the set with a game-winning kill while giving HU a commanding 2-0 match advantage.

Maryland Eastern Shore jumped out to another early lead in set three, 5-4, until the Bison went on a 4-0 spurt to take an 8-5 advantage. UMES pulled within one after consecutive HU errors, 8-7, but Howard created separation with 10 unanswered points to put the game out-of-reach; thus, knocking off the Hawks for their fourth streak win.

McKinnon finished with 12 kills (match-high) and eight digs while Awojobi registered six kills, three total blocks and a pair of service aces in the victory.

Reigning MEAC Setter of the Week Leah Reeves (Allen, Texas) notched 30 assists (10 assists per set) in the road win.

Anisa Dorlouis led UMES with a double-double (19 digs & 16 assists) in the loss.

Howard is set to play Morgan State Friday (Oct. 11) at 6 p.m., and Coppin State Sunday (Oct. 13) at 1 p.m., inside Burr Gymnasium.
