WASHINGTON (October 13, 2024) – Howard University women's volleyball team continued its reign atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rankings with Sunday afternoon's 3-0 win (25-22, 25-14, 25-12) over No. 2 Coppin State (CSU).
The victory moves the Bison to a 12-5 (6-0 MEAC) record while the Eagles fall 9-12 (5-1 MEAC).
Conference lead scorer
Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) opened the battle with her first kill of the afternoon. Five straight attacks from the Eagles moved the Bison to call a timeout. The regroup worked in their favor with
Amanda Ifeanyichukwu (The Woodlands, Texas) breaking up the charge with a kill.
Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) tied the board, 13-13, before tying it once again, 14-14, with the help of fellow senior
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) on the block.
Kills from Awojobi gave the Bison a 17-15 advantage before the Eagles went away on an uninterrupted 4-0 run to balance the board, 20-20. A service ace again gave CSU the upper hand but fell short as a 5-1 attack from HU led by Woodard earned the Bison the first set, 25-22.
Howard dominated the second set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead while forcing the Eagles to regroup. CSU's new game plan faltered as the Bison inched away to an 11-4 advantage.
Five straight attacks, highlighted by a service ace, brought Coppin State within two, 11-9. The Bison utilized three kills in a 7-0 surge, doubling the score, 18-9.
Aiming to keep the set alive, Coppin State managed two kills, holding the Bison at their 24
th point, but a final attack from McKinnon proved too strong for CSU's Coco Figueroa ending the set, 25-14.
The Bison took charge once again with a 5-0 lead. HU soon tripled the Eagles, 13-4. Using seven kills and a trio of aces,
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) dealt the final blows with back-to-back kills, closing the set, 25-12, for the sweep.
The Bison return to the court Sunday, October 20 at 3 p.m., when they travel to Norfolk, Va., to face the Norfolk State Spartans.
