WASHINGTON (October 20, 2024) – Howard University women's volleyball team extended its win streak after defeating Norfolk State (NSU) in straight sets (25-15, 25-19, 25-9).
With the victory, HU improved to 13-5 overall while remaining unblemished in league play (7-0).
Overall, the Bison eclipsed a .464 hitting percentage, including .571 in the final game.
Third-year Bison outside hitter
Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) led the Bison attack with 14 kills while producing a .444 hitting percentage in the win.
Howard led from start-to-finish in game one, registering a .452 hitting percentage while taking a 1-0 match advantage.
Both squads were deadlocked early in set two, 9-9, until the Bison created separation with two kills and a pair of service aces by graduate outside hitter
Aziah Buckner (Memphis, Tenn.), 13-9. From there, HU never looked back and took a commanding 2-0 match lead.
HU attacked the Spartans early in game three, pushing the margin to double digits after a service ace by junior libero
Claire Simpson (Plainfield, Ill.), 13-3. NSU battled, but unable to over the deficit; thus, falling to the Bison 25-9.
Senior outside hitter
Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y) racked up 10 kills, four digs and three total blocks (one solo).
For NSU (8-11, 2-4 MEAC), Gabrielle Gilbert had a team-leading 11 kills in the loss.
Wednesday (Oct. 23), HU begins a three-match home stretch with UMBC. First serve is set for 6 p.m., inside Burr Gymnasium.
