BALTIMORE (January 29, 2024) – Junior guard
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored a team-high 18 points to lead all starters in double figures as the Howard University men's basketball team pulled away to an 81-66 win over Coppin State University (CSU) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) clash at the Physical Education Complex Arena.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Bison (9-13, 3-3 MEAC).
The two teams battled through most of the first 20 minutes that featured seven ties and nine lead changes. Howard got just enough of a push late to take a 40-35 lead at intermission.
Then, in the second half, the Bison found a spark and bolted out to a lead, scoring 13 points in less than three minutes and never looked back.
The Bison shot 84-percent (21-of-25) from the free throw line, held a 34-22 advantage in the paint and assisted on 16 of their 26 baskets.
Harris was too much for the hosts to handle as he connected on 6-of-10 from the floor, while grabbing a career-best 15 rebounds. A strong candidate for MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, the New York native added three assists, a block and two steals to his stat sheet.
Sophomore forward
Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) complemented Harris by scoring 11 points in the paint and grabbing five rebounds.
With that duo doing most of the damage in the paint area, junior guard
Marcus Dockery (Washington), graduate forward
Seth Towns (Columbus, Ohio) and graduate guard
Isiah Warfield (Monaca, Pa.) provided balance with their outside shooting and scoring in transition. The trio connected on 6-of-17 from beyond the arc.
Dockery, who leads the MEAC in three-point shooting, finished with 15 points. Towns, who is making a strong bid for MEAC Player of the Year, added 14 points and five rebounds. Warfield, who missed some games due to injuries this season, had perhaps his best all-around play in a Bison unform. The 6-foot-5 guard finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Coppin State (2-17, 1-4 MEAC) was led by Ryan Archey with 20 points, followed by Justin Winston and Cameron Sparrow with 12 points and 11 points, respectively, off the bench.
NEXT UP: Howard has a few days off before traveling to Newark, N.J., to take on rival Hampton University in the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic Saturday (Feb. 3) at 4 p.m. It is the second time the two programs have met this season and it will close out Howard's nonconference schedule for the season.
