NEWARK, N.J. (February 3, 2024) – Sophomore forward
Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) and junior guard
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) each recorded double-doubles but a lack of production from the remaining starters proved to be the difference as the Howard University men's basketball team fell, 63-61, to Hampton University in the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic at the Prudential Center.
The contest aired live on TNT, filled with reactions, battles and real HU chants.
Campbell led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Harris tallied 16 points and 14 boards. The duo combined for 14-of-31 from the floor.
The remaining three starters (
Seth Towns,
Marcus Dockery &
Isiah Warfield) combined to miss 31-of-their-38 shots, including 5-of-21 from beyond the arc. Towns (Columbus, Ohio), the team-leading scorer at 15 points per game, shot a frigid 2-of-15. Dockery (Washington), the leading three-point shooter in the conference, did manage 11 points but it took 13 shots. Warfield (Monaca, Pa.), who had played well of late, joined the party by going 1-for-10 from the field; however, he did manage to hand out six assists.
The Bison's scoring woes were compounded by a lack of production from the bench, which was outscored, 51-6, by their Pirates counterparts.
Howard (9-14) got off to a good start, opening a 12-point lead in the first half that was buoyed by a 9-0 run. Howard dominated the first half on the defensive side despite a slow start, holding the Pirates to 27 points. Campbell and Harris combined for 14 rebounds on the boards in the first half.
The Pirates (5-18), who came into the game riding a 13-game losing skid, got the victory courtesy of a 9-2 run late. Howard led with 24 seconds left until Hampton came down the court and secured the win.
Overall, Hampton held Howard to 30-percent shooting (23-of-78) and scored 12 of their points off Bison turnovers. Offensively, Jerry Deng came off the bench to lead all scorers with 21 points and Jordan Nesbit, who also came off the bench, tallied 17 points in the win.
After tonight, both squads split the regular season with Howard winning the first matchup back in November, 92-80.
NEXT UP: The Bison return to league play when it travels to Dover, Del., to take on the much-improved Hornets of Delaware State. The tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
