BALTIMORE (January 27, 2024) – The Bison trio of fifth-year guard
Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.), sophomore forward
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) and redshirt freshman
Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) each reached double figures and scored their team's last five points to lead the Howard University women's basketball team to a 54-51 win over Morgan State University (MSU) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) clash at the Hill Field House.
It was the third straight win for the Bison (6-12, 3-1 MEAC) while the Bears have now lost seven-of-their-last-nine games.
Howard held on to a slim lead through most of the game and took a 42-35 lead into the fourth quarter. But MSU's Laila Fair and Sedayjha Payne fueled a 14-7 rally that tied the game at 40 with 1:16 remaining.
Then, Miller scored on a layup, thanks to a nice feed from Warren, to go up two, 51-49, with 50 seconds remaining.
The Howard defense, which held the Lady Bears to 32-percent shooting (18-of-56), got the defensive rebound from Miller and senior guard
Kaniyah Harris (Capital Heights, Md.), found Walker streaking to the basket for a layup that made the score 53-49 with 22 seconds remaining.
The Bears (6-13, 1-3 MEAC) answered with a Fair basket to get within two with 10 ticks remaining, but Warren responded and put the game away, hitting on one-of-two free throws to close out the scoring.
Warren, who missed the last game with an injury, led the team with 12 points and four assists. Miller, who continues to make a strong bid for MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, registered her second double-double of the season (11 points & 10 rebounds) to go along with four steals and two blocked shots.
Walker, a candidate for MEAC Rookie of the Year and coming off a career-best 24 points in the win over Norfolk State (Jan. 20), added 10 points in the victory.
Harris, who started in place of Warren, made her presence felt, collecting five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
For MSU, Fair led all scorers with 17 points and Payne chipped in 10 points. Morgan State outrebounded the Bison, 52-34.
NEXT UP: Howard returns to Baltimore to take on the improved Eagles of Coppin State Monday (Jan. 29) at 5:30 p.m.
