Penn State Downs Men’s Soccer with Late Rally

Nittany Lions score three times in the final 20 minutes

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (September 27, 2023) – Howard University men's soccer team grabbed the upper hand early and held the lead for nearly 70 minutes against one of the top programs in the country, but the Penn State (PSU) Nittany Lions rallied with three goals in the final 20 minutes to down HU, 3-1, at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa.

Graduate midfielder Roy Henderson (Fredericksburg, Va.) found junior forward Marcus Lewis (Toronto, Canada) in the opening moments, stunning the Nittany Lions while putting HU ahead, 1-0.

Penn State (6-1-2) was on the attack from that point on, outshooting Howard, 8-1, in the first 45 minutes, but the Bison refused to give.

Despite being down a man, HU backline and senior goalie Benjamin Hoesli (Bern, Switzerland) kept PSU off the board before intermission.

After halftime, the Nittany Lions continued their attack.

At the 71-minute mark, PSU's Ben Liscum scored an unassisted goal and tied the contest, 1-1.

Less than 10 minutes later, Samson Kpardeh gave the Nittany Lions their first lead of the match, thanks to an assist from Kris Shakes.

With only four ticks left, Peter Mangione added an insurance penalty kick goal, 3-1.

Hoesli finished the night with four saves in a losing effort.

On Oct. 1, Howard closes out its season-long eight-match road swing at Merrimack. Match time is set for 4 p.m., on NEC Front Row.
