WASHINGTON (September 14, 2023) – Howard University women's soccer (5-2-1, 1-0 NEC) extended its win streak to four with Thursday night's 2-0 win over Delaware State (0-6, 0-1 NEC).
The Bison offense was hungry, getting 10 shots off in the first half with seven on goal.
The aggressive ball movement proved fruitless by the halftime bell as the score sat at a 0-0 stalemate by the end of the first 45 minutes of play.
Delaware State (DSU) senior goalie Ashley Maribo (Brick, N.J.) kept up the Bison at bay until newcomer Asia Mickens-Perez (Upper Marlboro, Md.) connected with an assist from fellow freshman Samantha James (Herndon, Va.) to net her first career goal.
The Hornets' Audrey Abel (Fort Wayne, Ind.) got freshman keeper Trinity Knox (Atlanta) in on the action when a corner nearly resulted in a tie score in the 80th minute.
Junior standout Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) extended the lead five minutes later with the help of transfer defender Samone Knight (The Woodlands, Texas) with a shot to the low left corner of the net.
Eight Bison made shot attempts in the conference opener victory, led by Earley with eight.
The Bison outshot the Hornets overall, 22-4, and only allowed DSU to attempt two corner kicks through the night.
Knox added to her stats, marking her fourth shutout of the season.
The Bison continue conference play with a matchup against Le Moyne College Sunday, September 17, in Syracuse N.Y. at 3 p.m.
