PITTSBURGH (August 28, 2023) - Howard university men's soccer (0-1) kicked off its 2023 campaign with a 5-0 loss to No. 5 Pitt (1-0-1) Monday night. The season opener marked the beginning of an eight-game road streak for the Bison.
The Panthers found their first point in the 11th-minute when freshman Albert Thorsen (Drammen, Norway) snuck one into the bottom right of goal.
Approaching the 19th-minute, a scrum broke out at the net as Pitt fought for another goal.
The Bison defense held off a shot by junior Guilherme Feitosa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), but the Panthers bounced back with another attempt three seconds later. The quick shot to the bottom right of the net made its way through for a 2-0 lead.
The bottom left of the net appeared to be a weak spot for HU as the Panthers slipped in another point before the half.
Within the last 10 minutes of the matchup, Pitt managed to widen the gap even more with two goals bottom right of the net.
DMV native senior Peter Gansallo (Bowie, Md.) led the Bison offensively with a shot on goal.
Sophomore JR Gawel (St. Mary's, Md.) recorded seven saves throughout the full 90 minutes just one shy of his career high.
The Bison are back Friday, September 1 at 7 p.m. when they face Navy in Annapolis, Md.
