WASHINGTON (August 17, 2023) – Howard University women's soccer team opened the 2023 campaign in a stalemate against Elon, 3-3, at Greene Stadium.
HU (0-0-1) came out strong, outshooting Phoenix (0-0-1) in the first 45 minutes, 12-3.
Despite the strong start, Elon got on the board first at the 14-minute mark, 1-0.
In the waning moments before intermission, newcomer
Alauna Rutland (Fairfax, Va.) found junior
Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) and tied the contest at one apiece, 1-1.
Moments after halftime, senior midfielder
Marli Berry (Orangevale, Calif.) gave HU its first lead of the game on an unassisted goal at the 48-minute mark, 2-1.
Within the next 10 minutes, Elon regained the momentum with a pair of goals, including a penalty kick goal by Gabby Hoschek, 3-2.
Near the 60-minute mark, a miscue by Phoenix tied the match at three, 3-3.
For the final 30 minutes, both squads had opportunities, but unable to capitalize; thus, ending the exciting contest in a draw.
Freshman goalkeeper
Trinity Knox (Atlanta) made her Bison debut, producing four saves in the tie.
For Elon, Hoschek led the way with two goals while McKenna Dalfonso racked up seven saves.
On Aug. 20, HU battles Towson in a Sunday night showdown. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
