Women’s Soccer Suffers First Loss at Towson

Tigers outlast Bison

TOWSON, Md. (August 20, 2023) - Howard University women's soccer (0-1-1) suffered its first loss of the season as a second-half goal by Towson (2-0) sealed the deal Sunday evening.

Coming off a season-opening win at La Salle, 2-1, the matchup served as the Tiger's first home match, along with the Bison's first road game of the 2023 slate.

Towson put rookie goalkeeper Trinity Knox (Atlanta) to work fast as the Tigers came out hot with three shots in nearly as many minutes.

Junior Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) was the first to break through the Tiger defense, aiming just wide of the net. Florida native Cheyenne Lam (Fort Lauderdale) followed suit shortly after, putting the goalie to work with a shot on target. The Bison kicked up the tenacity, once again, in the final moments of the first half, getting two shots off within a minute.

The two teams went into the second half in a 0-0 stalemate, but the standoff did not last long. Three quick shots in two minutes resulted in redshirt senior Phoebe Canoles netting her first goal of the season.

Sounding off nine more shots throughout the half, Knox went on to add five additional saves to her budding stats.

Both Earley and Lam led the Bison offense with two shots apiece. Defensively, Knox ended the match with eight saves.

The Bison return home Thursday (August 24) at 7 p.m., as they host rival Hampton in the Battle of the Real HU.
