“Where Are They Now?” Featuring Kevin D. Tyson

Former Bison standout guiding leaders of tomorrow

WASHINGTON (August 10, 2023)Kevin D. Tyson was a full scholarship recipient on the Howard University football team. He was a four-year letterman and three-year starter on the squad.
 
Upon completing his eligibility, Tyson earned an NCAA Division I Degree completion award, along with a College of Arts and Sciences Trustee Scholarship. Additionally, he became a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Chapter.
 
In addition, he served as President of the Health, Human Performance, and Leisure Studies Department and was the Howard Representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
 
In December 2007, he graduated from HU with a B.S. in Human Performance and a minor in Secondary Education.
 
After obtaining his undergraduate degree, he attended Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., where he was awarded the Regent University Education Dean Scholarship and received his M.Ed. in Educational Leadership with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
 
Tyson believes in helping the community. He is a former Advisory Board member for The William Kellibrew Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for victims of violent crime and working to break the cycle of violence and poverty across the globe. Additionally, he is a charter member for the Rho Kappa Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
 
He firmly believes in Gandhi's quote, "Be the change you want to see in the world." With this idea in mind, Tyson founded two student organizations. The first is "Dedicated Men with a Vision (DMV)". They have taken part in several community service projects. Members receive monthly principles on manhood and becoming a gentleman. The second of these is "Determined Strong Women (DSW)". The club's motto is "Developing Dynamic Leaders Through Discipline and Dedication." They receive principles on womanhood and becoming a lady.
 
Tyson is honored to have received numerous recognitions for his dedication and service, including being named the 2022 Virginia Thespian Principal of the Year, 2020 Legacy Award Recipient from Jack and Jill of America, Loudoun County Chapter and 2018 Educator of the Year from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Mu Mu Chapter. He has also been featured on the front page of the Loudoun Times-Mirror Newspaper as well as listed as one of "Six Changemakers in Loudoun County" in the Loudoun Business Journal.
 
Currently, he works for Loudoun County Public Schools as a High School Principal. He is the first African American male and the youngest Principal of a comprehensive high school in the history of the school system.
 
In addition to being a Principal in LCPS, Tyson has served as a Teacher Assistant, Teacher, Dean, and Assistant Principal. He created the Student Transition and Reinforcement (STAR) program and School Mandated Academic Reinforcement Time (SMART) program. He coached multiple sports at Broad Run High School in Ashburn, VA. He helped coach the football team to back-to-back state championships, the lacrosse team to their sixth consecutive district title and developed the track team's first All-American shot putter in over a decade. He also served as a High School Assistant Principal and Career/Technical Education Director for Midfield City Schools in Midfield, Alabama.
 
Tyson spent the early years of his life in his hometown of Enterprise, Alabama, where he learned the work ethic and passion needed to be successful in life. He credits all of his success, first to his personal Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and secondly to his mother, Ms. Carolyn Tyson, who has been an educator for over 35 years. He is honored and blessed to have such an excellent role model in his life.
 
He is married to Ashley Tyson and has one son, August Ameer Tyson. He also has three siblings: Marcus; Chris and his twin sister, Kesley.

The weekly series of "Where Are They Now?" appears on Thursdays throughout the year.
 
The series will feature former student-athletes from all sports and eras, highlighting their careers as athletes at the University and what they are presently doing.
