DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 2, 2023) – Howard University men's golf team had its best round on the final day of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, tying a tournament-low 281 (-7) in round three. Despite their incredible performance, the Bison fell just five strokes short of winning its first conference title.
In 54 holes, HU shot 11-over par (875) and finished runner-up behind LIU (870, +6).
After the tourney, three Bison were named to the NEC All-Tournament Team.
Senior
Gregory Odom Jr. (Memphis, Tenn.) recorded 1-under par (71) in round three, including four birdies. The Memphis native tied for second after registering even par (216) during the three-day event.
Fellow classmate
Everett Whiten Jr. (Chesapeake, Va.) joined Odom on the All-Tournament Team after shooting 1-over par (217) in 54 holes of play. The Virginia product tied fourth overall, producing a 71 (-1) on the final day with four birdies, including three birdies on the back nine.
Junior
Marcus Smith Jr. (Rockford, Ill.) rounded out HU's All-Tournament honorees with a 4-under par (68) performance in round three with five birdies, including three birdies on the front nine. He placed sixth in the player standings.
Third-year Bison
Joshua Siplin (Orlando, Fla.) registered three birdies in the third round and finished tied for 20
th (227, +11).
Junior
Curtis Merritt (Wareham, Mass.) was the most consistent Bison during the final round, recording no bogeys and one birdie on hole nine (71, -1). The Massachusetts native took 26
th overall (229, +13).
LIU won its third NEC title in program history after shooting an impressive 7-under par (281) in round three.
Individually, LIU's Marcelo Mexsen won the event (212, -4) with a 5-under par (67) effort in the final round. Wagner's Thomas Choi tied for second with Odom.
The Bison's spring season concludes at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championships in Birmingham, Ala. (May 8-10).
