BALTIMORE (April 13, 2023) - After battling it out with the heat and the Eagles, Howard University softball came up short, 6-1, in the series finale against Coppin State (CSU) Thursday afternoon.
Offensively, the Bison were held to only four hits with rookie Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) going 2-of-3 in the loss.
The Eagles took flight in the bottom of the first, notching three runs in the opening frame.
Junior Sydni Jones (Whittier, Calif.) was the lone Bison to make it across the plate, seizing the opportunity on an error to second, 3-1.
Bottom second, CSU's Seryna Esparza hit a two-run homer, giving Coppin State a 5-1 advantage.
The Bison made quick work of the Eagles in the third, facing only four batters in the short inning before holding Coppin State off in the fourth.
Freshman pitcher Carleen Murray (British Colombia, Canada) made good use of her relief appearance, sending three Eagles in a row back to the dugout.
Bottom sixth, Murray finished the afternoon with three strikeouts in the inning.
For CSU (5-23, 2-10 MEAC), they produced six runs on seven hits, including a pair of homers from Esparza and Manaia Fonoti.
The Bison (11-21, 4-7 MEAC) continue road play this weekend (April 15-16) when they visit South Carolina State for a three-game series, beginning Saturday, April 15 at 1 pm., with a doubleheader, followed by a seven-inning contest Sunday, April 16, at noon.
