ORANGEBURG, S.C. (April 15, 2023) – Howard University softball team grabbed a split on the road at South Carolina State (SCSU). HU fell short in game one, 4-3, but rebounded in the nightcap with a shutout victory, 5-0.
HOWARD 5, SCSU 0 (GAME 2)
Rookie
Carleen Murray (British Columbia, Canada) ended HU's three-game skid with her first career complete-game shutout victory, tossing seven inning and striking out five Lady Bulldogs.
Fellow rookie
Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) got Howard on the board first with an RBI-single to left field, bringing home second-year Bison
Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.), 1-0.
Top three, the Bison tallied two more runs, including Fletcher's solo homer, 3-0.
Sophomores
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) and
Alyssa Watson (Eastvale, Calif.) delivered insurance runs in the seventh, each producing RBI-doubles in the final frame, 5-0.
Offensively, the Bison registered five runs on nine hits with Fletcher, Vasquez and sophomore
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) each manufacturing two hits apiece.
HOWARD 3, SCSU 4 (GAME 1)
HU managed three runs on seven hits, led by Fletcher and Weber with two hits each.
Fletcher opened the afternoon with an RBI-triple to right field, driving in Ricks, 1-0.
SCSU answered in its first at-bat, scoring twice on HU miscues and taking a 2-1 advantage after one.
Bottom three, the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead with two more runs, 4-1.
Despite the deficit, HU battled back in the sixth with Weber and second-year Bison
Victoria Brown (Carson, Calif.) driving in runs and closing the gap to one, 4-3.
In HU's last at-bat, SCSU's Destiny Calloway closed the door on a Bison comeback with three consecutive outs to end the game. The Virginia native threw a complete-game while striking out two batters in the win.
