Bison come up short against Vikings, 4-3

MORGANTOWN, W.V. (March 5, 2023) – Howard University women's tennis team came up short, falling to Cleveland State (CSU), 4-3, in a neutral site contest, held at West Virginia University.

Reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) led the way with a three-set win over the Vikings' Oihane Vicario (0-6, 6-4, 6-3).

Fellow classmate Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) served as the club's No. 2 singles player where she won in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).

In the No. 6 position, senior Emnet Simunyola (Lorton, Va.) picked up a two-set victory over CSU's Ella Franz (7-6 [7-2], 6-4).

Cleveland State won the other three singles matches, including CSU's Tereze Vevere defeating sophomore Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-3).

In doubles play, the Vikings won two matches, which would be the deciding factor.

With the setback, HU fell to 2-7 overall while Cleveland State improved to 8-6 on the season.

On March 16-18, Howard travels to Cary, N.C., for the annual MEAC Round Up where they will face South Carolina State (March 16), North Carolina Central (March 17) and Norfolk State (March 18).
