CARY, N.C. (March 18, 2023) – Howard University women's tennis team secured its first conference win of the season, defeating Norfolk State (NSU), 5-2, in the annual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Round Up at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
HU (3-9, 1-2 MEAC) opened the afternoon with a pair of doubles wins, taking a 1-0 match lead into singles play.
Sophomore
Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) and newcomer
Selah Stibbins (Minneapolis) represented HU as the club's top doubles team, knocking off NSU's Laura Ruiz and Breana Cook, 6-3. Sophomores
Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) and
Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) blanked the Spartans' Niya Grant and Zada McMorris, 6-0.
In singles competition, Butcher, Pegram and senior
Alexandra Blackwell (Austin, Texas) won their respective matches in straight sets.
Grayson dropped a tough, three-set match to Norfolk State's Aleksandra Evdokimova (6-4, 1-6, 6-10).
Sunday (March 26), Howard travels to Towson, Md., to face the Towson Tigers. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
