CARY, N.C. (March 16, 2023) – Howard University men's tennis team grabbed its first league win of the season, edging out Norfolk State (NSU), 4-3, in the annual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Round Up at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
HU took the early match lead, winning two-out-of-three in doubles competition.
Junior
Gabe Knowles (Allentown, Pa.) and second-year Bison and D.C. native
Daniel Dunac defeated NSU's Hugo Massoni Lena and Boris Lunin, 6-4. Juniors
Hassimiyou Dieng (Dakar, Senegal) and
Pierce Westbrook (New Orleans) blanked the Spartans' Roosevelt Brown II and Ibrahim Abbas, 6-0.
In singles play, Knowles won easily in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) while Dieng rallied from an early deficit to win in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-3).
Sophomore
Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) served as the club's No. 2 singles player, defeating Massoni Lena in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
HU (3-5, 1-0 MEAC) returns to the court Friday (March 17), facing reigning MEAC Champions South Carolina State. Match time is set for 6 p.m. at Cary Tennis Park.
