PHILADELPHIA (February 5, 2023) – Howard University women's tennis team fell in its season opener at Temple, 5-2.
Despite the loss, senior
Alexandra Blackwell (Austin, Texas) and freshman
Selah Stibbins (Minneapolis) picked up singles victories.
After dropping set one, 3-6, the Texas native rebounded with a 6-4 win in game two and edged out Temple's Ginevra Peiretti in the deciding set, 11-9.
Stibbins defeated the Owls' Evie Wei in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) to pickup her first collegiate singles win.
In doubles play, senior
Yemisi Ifederu (London, England) and second-year Bison
Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) knocked off Temple's Peiretti and Sena Takebe, 6-3.
Temple won the other two doubles matches, 6-2 and 6-3, respectively.
HU returns to The District Friday (Feb. 10) to face UDC. Match time is slated for 3:45 p.m., at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's East Capitol Campus in Southeast D.C.
