ORANGEBURG, S.C. (February 27, 2023) – Howard University women's basketball team secured a road win over South Carolina State (SCSU), 60-55, in their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
With the victory, HU moved back to .500 overall (13-13, 9-4 MEAC) while the Lady Bulldogs dropped to 3-25 (2-11 MEAC).
Graduate guard
Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Bison with 15 points.
After taking a nine-point advantage into the second period, 19-10, the Bison went on an 11-0 run in the quarter, establishing a level of dominance on the court. Sophomore guard
Nyla Cooper (Fayetteville, N.C.) made major contributions to the ball movement and junior forward
Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) came into the game providing major defensive presence.
The Bison started the second half with a 17-point lead, 35-18.
In the third, Howard maintained a high press and strong defensive presence. Freshman
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) came up big with a steal, followed by an "and-one" play.
South Carolina State struggled to put shots up on the offensive side of the ball. Creek continued to make an impact in the game with a huge block at about the five-minute mark. The quarter ended in favor of HU, 53-30.
Although the Bulldogs started to slightly close the gap in the fourth quarter, it was not enough to overtake the Bison.
Things started to get a bit sloppy for Howard towards the final minutes, only scoring seven points in the fourth quarter, but the Bison was able to still come out on top.
Junior guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) finished with 14 points and Cooper closely followed with 11 points.
HU outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs, 48-39, with five different Bison recording five-plus rebounds.
Howard had 19 turnovers, something they will look to improve in the next game.
For SCSU, Nicole Gwynn and Lovely Sonnier each had 17 points in the loss.
Howard will host Norfolk State Thursday (March 2) for a 6 p.m. tip-off at Burr Gymnasium in their last conference match-up before tournament play.
