BALTIMORE (February 20, 2023) – Howard University women's basketball team picked up a hard-fought road win at rival Morgan State (MSU), 64-58, inside the Hill Field House.
With the victory, HU moved back to .500 (12-12, 8-3 MEAC) while the Lady Bears dropped to 16-8 (9-2 MEAC).
"I'm very proud of my team," said Howard women's basketball head coach
Ty Grace postgame. "We played tough and showed heart and grit. The team stepped up tonight."
Junior guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) led the Bison with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 50-percent (4-of-8) from downtown.
Morgan State won the tip and came out with spirit in the opening plays. MSU had the momentum quick early, but not quick enough to take the Bison out of their game. HU trailed the Bears, 18-14, at the end of the quarter.
Howard struggled from the floor to open the second quarter until Howell ended the shooting woes with a three-pointer.
With 30 seconds left, graduate guard
Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.) came up big with an old-fashion three-point play, followed by a steal in Bear territory by freshman forward
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.), resulting in two free throws by sophomore guard
Nyla Cooper (Fayetteville, N.C.).
The Bears led, 31-29, at the half.
Howard tied things up on the first play of the second half, with a jump shot by Howell. As the game went on, Howard took over the momentum, leading by three near the six-minute mark in the third period. HU made some major three-point shots, thanks to Howell and Cooper to stretch their lead to five. The Bison spirit that was missing last game was revived in the third, closing the period with a 49-42 advantage.
The environment became rowdy and the intensity began to rise, causing lots of scrappy back-and-forth play.
Morgan State tied the game at 52-52, but senior forward
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) scored a bucket late to put the Bison back ahead. Howard made clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the road win.
Aziah Hudson finished with 14 points while Fort-Davis added 12 points and seven boards in the win.
For MSU, Charlene Shepherd had a team-leading 20 points while Taylor Addison produced a double-double (12 boards and 10 points) in the loss.
The Bison will travel to North Carolina Central Saturday (Feb. 25) to face off for the second time this season. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m., inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
