VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (February 21, 2023) – Howard University men's track & field team took second overall at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships, held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
HU scored 109 points and finished behind back-to-back MEAC Champions Norfolk State Spartans.
In the 60-meter hurdles final, four Bison competed, led by senior
Jermanie Byrd (Miami Gardens, Fla.) and junior
Zachary Hawkins (Lithonia, Ga.) with second (7.84) and third (7.93) place finishes. Seniors
Darian Clyburn (Louisville) and
Kameron Davis (Miami) also competed and earned fifth (7.99) and eighth (8.27), respectively.
Byrd also took part in the 200-meter dash, along with newcomer
Dylan Gaines (Houston), where they placed fourth (21.48) and eighth (21.90), respectively.
Gaines competed in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 48.42, which led to a second-place finish.
Seniors
Ja'Leak Perry (Atlanta) and
Goba Dan-Princewill (Houston) made the 60-meter dash final where they earned sixth (6.83) and eighth (6.95), respectively.
Senior
Ayoade Adebiyi (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore
Julian Lawson (Sewell, N.J.) participated in the mile run and 3K run. In the mile run, they placed sixth (4:20.72) and eighth (4:40.49), respectively, while the 3K run saw the pair of Bison earned fourth (8:52.23) and eighth (9:36.57), respectively.
Other notable track performance included second-year Bison
Kaleb Berry (Duncanville, Texas) claiming fourth in the 800-meter run (1:56.42).
In the field, sophomore
Chase Drewery (Waldorf, Md.) earned the bronze medal after laying 15.05 meters.
Norfolk State's Gidion Sigei and Regan Kimtai won MEAC Co-Outstanding Runners and head coach Kenneth Giles earned Outstanding Coach. North Carolina Central's Jaelyn Blanc took home the meet's Outstanding Field Athlete.
On March 4-5, several Bison will travel to Boston for the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships.
