Men’s Track & Field Remains in Second at the MEAC Indoor Championships

Bison put on another solid performance in Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (February 20, 2023) – Howard University men's track & field team remains in second place after Day Two of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships, held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
 
After six events, HU trails defending MEAC Champions Norfolk State, 63-53.
 
Sophomore Eric Brown, Jr. (Raleigh, N.C.) highlighted the day, winning gold in the heptathlon with a score of 4507. Third-year Bison Ezekiel Hawkins (Lithonia, Ga.) also competed in the event where he finished third overall (4038).
 
The distance medley relay squad of sophomores Kaleb Berry (Duncanville, Texas), Marsellis Davis (Columbus, Ohio) and Julian Lawson (Sewell, N.J.) and newcomer Kobe Hutson (Bridgetown, Barbados) took second after clocking in at 10:18.59.
 
In the 60-meter hurdles, four Bison reached the final round. Senior Jermanie Byrd (Miami Gardens, Fla.) and junior Zachary Hawkins (Lithonia, Ga.) grabbed automatic qualifying times of 7.91 and 7.79, respectively, while seniors Kameron Davis (Miami) and Darian Clyburn (Louisville) picked up non AQ times of 8.11 and 8.13, respectively.
 
Seniors Goba Dan-Princewill (Houston) and Ja'Leak Perry (Atlanta) earned spots in the 60-meter dash final, producing times of 6.86 and 6.85, respectively.
 
Other notable performance on the track included freshman Dylan Gaines (Houston) grabbing a slot in the 400-meter dash with a non AQ time of 48.62.
 
In the field, senior Nnamdi Olebara (Bowie, Md.) finished third overall in the weight throw after tossing over 54 feet (16.49 meters). Fellow classmate Ezra Monterio (Newport, R.I.) and newcomer Andre Prince (Windsor, Conn.) also took part, earning fifth (15.66 meters) and eighth (14.50 meters), respectively.
 
Wednesday's action begins at 9:30 a.m., with the women's pole vault. Running events get going at 12:30 p.m., with the final of the women's mile. All of Wednesday's action will be streamed live on the MEAC Digital Network on YouTube.
