WASHINGTON (February 18, 2023) – Akron outscored the Howard University women's lacrosse team after intermission, 11-1, to spoil the Bison's home opener at Greene Stadium. HU fell to the Zips, 20-4.
Offensively, freshman
Berkeley Clayborne (Highland Park, Ill.) led the Bison attack with three goals and a draw control.
Akron (1-0) scored moments in the first quarter, but Clayborne responded and tied the contest, 1-1, thanks to an assist from senior midfielder
Quai Skeete-Ridley (New Carrolton, Md.). Akron added two more goals in the opening frame and took a 3-1 lead after one.
Akron's momentum continued into the second quarter with a 5-0 run and taking a commanding 8-1 advantage.
HU (0-2) refused to go away, scoring twice to cut the deficit to five, 8-3, but Akron capped the quarter with another goal before halftime, 9-3.
After the break, the Zips took control and held Howard scoreless in the third while ballooning the lead to double-digits, 17-3.
In the fourth, senior attacker
Heidi Chicas (Hyattsville, Md.) found Clayborne for her third goal of the day to end the scoring drought, 17-4. Akron closed out the contest with three unanswered goals.
Skeete-Ridley filled the stat sheet, finishing with three ground balls, two caused turnovers and two assists. Fifth-year senior
Andrea Fievre (Snellville, Ga.) produced three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in the loss.
For Akron, Noelle Boyd and Alexis Kiefer recorded four goals in the victory.
On Feb. 24, HU heads to American University. The match is set for noon.
