CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (February 11, 2023) – Howard University women's lacrosse team fell in its season opener, 16-4, to Delaware State (DSU) in a neutral site contest held at UNC Chapel Hill.
Freshman
Berkeley Clayborne (Highland Park, Ill.) led the Bison attack with a pair of goals.
DSU (1-0) scored the first four goals of the contest, but newcomer
Chase Coleman (Houston) ended HU's scoring drought, 4-1. Delaware State responded and closed out the first quarter with two more goals, 6-1.
In the second period, DSU's London Downing scored the lone goal and extended the Lady Hornets advantage, 7-1.
Moments after intermission, freshman
Tea Vasquez (Oakland, Calif.) found Clayborne for the Bison's second goal of the match, 8-2.
With time running out in the third, Clayborne scored again on a free position shot, 12-3.
Second-year Bison
Kimora Williams (Marlton, N.J.) closed out HU's scoring on an unassisted goal.
Fifth-year senior
Andrea Fievre (Snellville, Ga.) collected a match-high four ground balls while fellow classmate
Madison Joines (Winston-Salem, N.C.) return home and caused two turnovers (team-best) in a losing effort.
Downing finished four goals in the Lady Hornets' win.
On Feb. 17, HU (0-1) returns to The District to host Akron in the home opener. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
