Women’s Basketball Grabs Road Victory at Florida Atlantic

Bison secure first road win at Owls

BOCA RATON, Fla. (December 16, 2023) – Howard University women's basketball team grabbed its first road win of the season, edging out Florida Atlantic (FAU), 46-45, inside the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

With the victory, HU snapped its nine-game slide.

Senior forward Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) led the Bison with 12 points in a reserve role.

Howard (2-10) held a three-point advantage after one, thanks to back-to-back field goals from freshman guard Janyah Bohanon (Cleveland) and junior forward Amirah Allen (Raleigh, N.C.), 13-10.

FAU (4-5) closed the gap before intermission, trailing 24-22.

HU extended its lead to double digits after halftime, thanks to Creek's trey ball off a turnover, 39-29. Florida Atlantic battled back and trimmed the margin to six after three quarters of play, 41-35.

With less than six minutes remaining, junior forward Vanessa Blake (Summerville, S.C.) converted the old-fashion three-point play and gave the Bison a seven-point advantage, 44-37. From that point, the Owls went on an 8-1 run and tied the contest with 1:42 left after a pair of free throws from Devyn Scott, 45-45.

With 79 ticks left, second-year Bison Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) was fouled and went to the charity stripe where she gave HU a slim one-point advantage after splitting two free throws.

FAU had its couple of opportunities down the stretch to reclaim the lead, but the Bison tough defense prevailed.

Miller flirted with a double-double, finishing with 11 boards and nine points.

For FAU, Mya Perry led all scorers with 19 points in a losing effort.

Thursday (Dec. 21), HU hosts Hofstra for Education Day. Tipoff is slated for noon inside Burr Gymnasium.
