PHILADELPHIA (December 11, 2023) – Graduate forward
Seth Towns (Columbus, Ohio) scored a team-high 16 points to lead four Bison in double figures, but it was not enough as the Howard University men's basketball team fell, 78-68, to the University of Pennsylvania (7-5) in a nonconference matchup at the Palestra.
The Bison (3-6) got off to a good start, using a 12-0 run over a five-minute stretch to take a 28-17 lead. Junior guard
Marcus Dockery (Washington) led the way, scoring 13 of his team's points.
Then, the Quakers reeled off a run of their own and took a 39-36 lead to the locker room.
Towns and junior guard
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) helped keep the Bison within range until a combination of Quaker runs and HU cold shooting during a five-minute stretch enabled Penn to open its biggest lead, 78-64.
The statistics were pretty even except in the area of the bench where the Quakers outscored HU, 16-9, and at the free throw line where they converted on 18-of-23 while Howard made good on 7-of-9 attempts.
Dockery finished with 15 points while Harris recorded 10 points and 6 rebounds. Graduate guard
Jelani Williams (Washington) returned to Philly, finishing with 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds in the loss.
The Quakers got a game-high 20 points from Clark Slajchert, 15 points from Sam Brown, 13 points and nine rebounds from local freshman Tyler Perkins (The Landon School) and 10 points from Nick Spinoso.
NEXT UP: Howard hosts Regent University Wednesday (Dec. 13) in an early 1 p.m. weekday tipoff inside Burr Gymnasium.
