ATLANTA (November 9, 2023) - Howard University men's basketball team got a team-high 22 points from sophomore
Shy Odom (Roxbury, Mass.), 15 points from junior
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) and 18 points off the bench from
Joshua Strong (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), but it was not enough as the Bison fell, 88-85, to Georgia Tech (2-0) in an entertaining nonconference game at the McCamish Pavilion.
Howard got off to a great start and controlled the action through most of the game. In fact, the Bison held the lead for over 30 minutes until the Yellow Jackets made a late push.
The game featured eight lead changes and five ties. Each team had scoring runs of 11 points in the second half, but Georgia Tech's run came last with the Bison leading as many as 14 points in the second half.
With sophomore starting center
Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) in foul trouble, Howard went to Odom, a 6-foot-6 forward and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year.
Just like in the opening win against Hampton Monday (Nov. 6), Odom put his imprint on the game. While logging 37 minutes, he converted on 9-of-17 from the floor and added seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks to his night's work.
Harris, a 6-foot-4 guard, again showed that he is player to be reckoned with as he connected on 7-of-11 from the floor for his 17 points while also grabbing eight rebounds.
A graduate transfer, Strong helped the Bison keep their ACC opponent at bay with 18 points. Fellow classmate
Isiah Warfield (Monaca, Pa.) contributed nine points and seven rebounds in a losing cause.
The Bison shot 58-percent from the floor in the first half and over 50-percent for the game. It marked the second game that they have put up big number (92 points vs Hampton).
Junior
Marcus Dockery (Washington), the Bison's junior sharpshooter, cooled down and finished with seven points on 3-of-13 shooting, 1-of-8 from his specialty area beyond the arc.
Georgia Tech was led by Miles Kelly, who led all scorers with 27 points and Tyzhaun Claude and Kowacie Reeves contributed 19 points and 15 points, respectively.
NEXT UP: Howard travels to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on the Dukes of James Madison Sunday (Nov. 12) at 4 p.m.
