NORFOLK, Va. (November 20, 2023) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed its 2023 Football Postseason honors where Howard University saw 14 Bison recognized for their outstanding efforts. The announcement came Monday.
Seven Bison made the All-MEAC First Team, led by All-American candidates offensive lineman
Anim Dankwah (Ontario, Canada) and defensive back
Kenny Gallop, Jr. (Portsmouth, Va.).
Dankwah, along with fellow All-MEAC First Team honoree
Da'Metrius Weatherspoon (Clairton, Pa.), anchored the league's top offense, averaging nearly 384 yards per game.
Versatile wideout
Kasey Hawthorne (Sebring, Fla.) made the All-MEAC First Team after leading the conference with 35 receptions in 10 games.
Defensively, Gallop and the Bison secondary topped the country in pass defense, allowing only 129.1 yards per game in the air.
Defensive Lineman
Darrian Brokenburr (Manassas, Va.), linebacker
Terrance Hollon (Cleveland) and punter
Aaron Bickerton (Stoke-on-Trent, England) also earned spots on the All-MEAC First Team.
Quarterback
Quinton Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and return specialist
Ian Wheeler (Houston) highlighted the All-MEAC Second Team.
Williams kept drives alive for the Bison all season, putting the offense in manageable third downs, which ranks ninth in the county with a 47-percent third-down conversion.
For the third straight season, Wheeler was named an all-conference return specialist, posting a 26.4 average with an 88-yard KO return in the road win at Robert Morris (Sept. 30).
Running Backs
Eden James (Port St. Lucia, Fla.) and
Jarett Hunter (Mineral, Va.), offensive lineman
Darius Fox (Washington), defensive lineman
Jamel Stewart (Richmond, Va.) and defensive back
Carson Hinton join Williams and Wheeler on the All-MEAC Second Team.
Bickerton also made the All-Conference Second Team as a kicker, going a perfect 8-of-8 in field goal attempts.
North Carolina Central's Torricelli Simpkins II was named the Offensive Lineman of the Year, while South Carolina State's Jawarn Howell earned Rookie of the Year honors. North Carolina Central head coach Trei Oliver was named MEAC Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
The conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year recipients will be announced during the National Football Hall of Fame as a part of the 65
th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Aria Resort in Las Vegas.
All awards and honors were voted on by the MEAC's head football coaches and sports information directors.
On Dec. 16, Howard plays its final game of the 2023 campaign at the Cricket Celebration Bowl in Atlanta where they will face the Southwestern Athletic Conference Champion for the HBCU National Title.
