WASHINGTON (October 8, 2023) – Stonehill (SC) spoiled the Howard University men's soccer team home opener, rallying from an early 2-0 deficit to down HU, 3-2, at Greene Stadium.
Howard outshot SC in the first 45 minutes, 8-6, led by All-NEC selection junior
Bryson Baker (Ellicott City, Md.) and sophomore
Christian Rufael (Washington) with two attempts apiece.
At the seven-minute mark, Baker scored his second goal of the season off a rebound shot from Rufael and gave the Bison an early 1-0 lead.
Nearly seven minutes later, fellow DMV native
Peter Gansallo (Bowie, Md.) found Rufael and extended the lead, 2-0.
Down, but not out, Stonehill responded, led by Jacob Woznicki with a pair of goals before intermission (15' & 36') and tied the match at halftime, 2-2.
SC flipped-the-script after intermission, outshooting the Bison, 6-1.
At the 66-minute mark, Woznicki recorded a hat trick with his third goal of the contest, thanks to an assist by Jaxson Kahawai, and gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the match, 3-2.
HU battled down the stretch but were unable to deliver the match-tying goal before the horn sound.
Senior goalie
Benjamin Hoesli (Bern, Switzerland) registered a match-leading six saves in the loss.
Howard journeys to Brooklyn, N.Y., to face LIU in a conference showdown Sunday (Oct. 15). Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
