WASHINGTON (September 18, 2022) – Howard University women's soccer team (0-7-1) continue to fight for their first win of the season after falling 1-0 to Merrimack College (4-4-2) Sunday morning.
The Warriors' lone goal came as a shock to all as Merrimack sophomore Ella Cormier took a light shot that slowly rolled into the net after Howard's goalkeeper
Kennedy Jones (Flossmoor, Ill.) ran into a defender on her way back to the cage.
The Bison fought back with tenacity, staying predominately on the Warriors' side of the field for the next six minutes. Howard finished out the half with six shots. Jones faced nine shots in the first half while posting three saves.
The Bison's
Victoria Thornton (Plainfield, Ill.) and
Zaria Stevenson (Dallas) anchored the defense, shutting down multiple Warrior attempts outside the 18. The second half was a battle of the defenders as the two sides played the last 45 minutes without a score.
While Howard had a 4-1 corner kick advantage over the Warriors, Merrimack outshot the Bison by a small 15-14 margin overall. The Bison evened out the shots on goal with seven apiece. Jones stood her ground, winning several one-on-one battles while recording six saves total.
The Bison are back on the road as they travel to Loretto, Pa., to take on Saint Francis (Pa.) Thursday, September 29 at 4 p.m.
