WASHINGTON (September 11, 2022) – Howard University women's soccer team fell short to crosstown rival George Washington (GW), 2-1, at Greene Stadium.
The physical contest saw 29 total shots combined, along with 16 fouls.
Moments into the match, Rachel Sorkenn found Lauren Prentice and put the Colonials ahead early, 1-0.
At the nine-minute mark, sophomore
Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) was fouled in the box and rewarded with a penalty kick. The California native capitalized on her opportunity and tied the contest at one apiece before intermission.
After intermission, Sorkenn scored the go-ahead goal at the 73-minute mark, thanks to an assist from Aza Keohan, to down the Bison, 2-1.
Junior goalkeeper
Kennedy Jones (Flossmoor, Ill.) had a career-high eight saves in the loss.
For GW (3-0-3), Sorkenn tallied three points (one goal and one assist) while goalkeeper Ainsley Lumpe registered a pair of saves in the victory.
Thursday (Sept. 15), Howard (0-5-1) hosts Fairleigh Dickinson in the conference opener. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
