CARY, N.C. (April 9, 2022) – Howard University softball team swept Saturday's twinbill at North Carolina Central (NCCU). HU edged out the Eagles in game one, 4-3, and cruised to victory in the nightcap, 19-3 (f/6).
 
GAME TWO (Howard 19, NCCU 3 [f/6])
 
In the nightcap, the Bison scored their most runs against NCCU, dating back to 2010.
 
Howard pounded out 19 runs on 13 hits with nine Bison recording a hit in the victory. Freshman standout 
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) went 4-of-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored in the win.
 
Senior 
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) drove in freshman 
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) and gave the Bison a 1-0 edge after one.
 
The next two innings, HU scored twice in the second and third to take a commanding 5-0 advantage, but North Carolina Central's Hailey Batista got NCCU on the board with an RBI-double, 5-1.
 
After both squads tallied a run in the fourth, 6-3, the Bison scored four times in the fifth, highlighted by Dennis' two-run double, and ballooned the margin to seven after five, 10-3.
 
HU exploded for nine runs in the sixth; thus, enforcing the mercy rule after six innings of play.
 
Dennis went 2-of-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored while fellow classmate 
Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.) added three RBIs in the victory.
 
Senior 
Sydney Hixenbaugh (Millstone, N.J.) earned second win of the season after allowing no runs and no hits in 2.1 innings of work.
 
GAME ONE (Howard 4, NCCU 3)
 
HU picked up their fourth one-run victory of the season after producing four runs on six hits, led by Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Player of the Year senior 
Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) going 2-of-4 with an RBI and run scored.
 
Top two, Navarro got Howard on the board with an RBI-single through the right side, bringing home newcomer 
Jade Greene (Upper Marlboro, Md.), 1-0.
 
NCCU tied the contest at one apiece, thanks to Batista's RBI-double.
 
HU regained the upper hand with a pair of runs and held a 3-1 lead after five.
 
In the seventh, Dennis drilled a solo shot over the centerfield wall and extended the margin to three, 4-1.
 
In their final at-bat, the Eagles scored twice and had bases loaded, but freshman 
Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) closed the door with a game-saving strikeout in relief.
 
Senior pitcher 
Tracy Mosley (Jonesboro, Ga.) secured her second win of the season in relief while Gonzales grabbed her second save on the year.
 
UPCOMING SEASON
 
Howard (16-19, 7-3 MEAC) and NCCU (9-22, 6-5 MEAC) wrap up the series Sunday (April 10) in Cary, N.C. at Thomas Brooks Park. First-pitch is set for noon.
