DOVER, Del. (April 30, 2022) – Howard University softball team grabbed a pair of road wins at Delaware State (DSU) Saturday afternoon in Dover, Del. HU won game one, 10-3, and rallied to take the nightcap, 9-5.
With today's wins, this marks the program's highest win total since 2006.
GAME ONE (HOWARD 10, DELAWARE STATE 3)
The league's top scoring attack produced 10 runs on 13 hits with four Bison recording multi-hit performances.
HU jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage in the first frame, highlighted by a two-run single from rookie
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.).
Top four, Howard extended its lead with three more runs and held a commanding 7-0 advantage.
DSU fought back, tallying a combined three runs in the fourth and fifth innings while trimming the margin to four after five, 7-3.
In the sixth, HU regained the momentum with three runs of their own and put the contest out of reach, 10-3.
Vasquez finished three RBIs and a pair of runs scored while fellow classmate
Alyssa Watson (Eastvale, Calif.) and senior
Ayana Sallee (Chesapeake, Va.) had two RBIs apiece in the win.
Newcomer
Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) earned her fourth win on the year, tossing four innings and striking out six Lady Hornets in the victory.
GAME TWO (HOWARD 9, DELAWARE STATE 5)
The nightcap saw HU rack up nine runs on 12 hits, led by Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year senior
Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) going 2-of-3 with three RBIs in the victory.
Howard struck first with a pair of RBI singles from Vasquez and senior
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.), 2-0.
DSU capitalized on HU's errors in the second, scoring three runs while taking a 3-2 edge after two.
Howard reclaimed the upper hand with three runs in the third, but the Lady Hornets fought back and cut the margin to one, thanks to a two-run double from Emma Glawson, 6-5.
HU added two runs in the fifth and extended the lead to three, 8-5.
Top seven, Navarro delivered an RBI-single to bring home DMV native rookie
Jade Greene (Upper Marlboro, Md.), 9-5.
Senior
Sydney Hixenbaugh (Millstone, N.J.) picked up her fifth win of the season in relief, facing 12 batters in 3.2 innings of work.
