WASHINGTON (April 19, 2022) – Howard University softball team kept the win streak alive, holding off Coppin State (CSU), 8-5, at Washington Nationals Youth Academy in southeast D.C.
With the victory, HU (21-19, 12-3 MEAC) extended its program record win streak to nine games while completing the season sweep against CSU (3-33, 3-12 MEAC).
Howard produced eight runs on eight hits, led by senior
Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.) and freshman
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) going a combined 4-of-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs in the win.
CSU took an early 1-0 advantage, but the Bison responded with a pair of runs in the second and took a 2-1 lead after two innings.
In the fourth, Coppin State tied the contest at two apiece, but HU regained the upper hand and held a 3-2 edge after four.
Next inning, Howard scored three times and extended the lead to four after five innings, 6-2.
Top six, CSU's Brissa Alvarado closed the gap to one after a three-run shot over the left fence, 6-5, but HU answered with two runs in the bottom half and held a three-run advantage after six, 8-5.
In their final at-bat, the Eagles had a pair of base runners on and the tying run at home, but graduate
Analise De La Roca (San Pedro, Calif.) closed the door and earned her first save of the season.
Senior
Tracy Mosley (Jonesboro, Ga.) secured her third win of the year, going four innings in a reserve role, while De La Roca picked up a four-out save in the win.
Coppin State recorded five runs on seven hits in the loss.
On April 23-24, Howard meets Maryland Eastern Shore in their home series finale. Saturday's (April 23) doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and Sunday's (April 24) seven-inning contest begins at noon with Senior Day festivities.
