WASHINGTON (February 21, 2022) – Howard University women's tennis team dominated in their season opener, defeating Mount St. Mary's (MSM), 6-1, at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's (WTEF) East Capitol Campus in southeast D.C.
With the victory, HU improved to 1-0 on the young season while The Mount dropped to 1-4 overall.
Howard got off to a quick start, sweeping all three doubles matches while earning a match point.
In singles play, freshmen
Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.),
Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) and
Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) each won their respective contests in straight sets.
Third-year Bison
Yemisi Ifederu (London, England) defeated MSM's Adriana Barney in consecutive sets (6-1, 7-5) and fellow classmate
Hana El Sherif (Cairo, Egypt) grabbed a win over The Mount's Ryan McCarthy (6-2, 6-2).
Friday (Feb. 25), Howard hosts Longwood in a nonconference matchup. First serve is set for 1 p.m. The following day (Feb. 26), HU wraps up its three-match homestand versus Loyola (Md.). Match time is slated for 2 p.m. Both contests will be played at WTEF East Capitol Campus in southeast D.C.
