Women’s Basketball Outlasts Coppin State

Bison move in sole possession of first place

WASHINGTON (February 21, 2022) – The Howard University women's basketball team outlasted Coppin State (CSU) in a hard, fought Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) bout inside Burr Gymnasium, 70-67.

With the victory, HU improved to 15-8 overall (9-2 MEAC) while moving into sole possession of first place in the league standings.

"We told the team to stay composed, be patient on offense and defend," said Howard women's basketball head coach Ty Grace after Monday's victory. "We knew it was going to be a tight game and we pulled it out."

Reigning MEAC Player of the Week sophomore Anzhane' Hutton (Dallas) notched her second straight double-double, finishing with 19 points and 11 boards. Third-year Bison Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) fell just short of producing her own double-double, ending with 19 points and nine rebounds in the win.

Sophomore Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) opened the game with breakaway layup, assisted by junior Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.), and gave HU the early upper hand. The Bison came out on top of the first quarter, 20-16.

The Bison struggled in the second quarter due to turnovers and allowed Coppin State to close in on the gap, resulting in a tied halftime score, 35-35.

After an evenly played third quarter, the Bison capitalized in the fourth with a 50-percent field goal percentage (6-of-12) from the floor.

Warren scored 11 points while Howell chipped in 10 points.

CSU (14-10, 8-3 MEAC) saw its six-game winning streak come to a halt. Aliyah Lawson led all scorers with a game-high 20 points in the loss.

UP NEXT:

Saturday (Feb. 26), the Bison face North Carolina Central at 2 p.m., in a MEAC matchup inside Burr Stadium on Senior Day.
