WASHINGTON (February 18, 2022) – Howard University women's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the season, knocking off crosstown rival University of District of Columbia (UDC), 14-8, at Greene Stadium.
 
With the win, HU improved to 1-2 on the young season while earning 
Karen Healy-Silcott her first victory as Bison head coach.
 
Freshman 
Taylor Matthews (Tampa, Fla.) had a match-high three goals in the win.
 
In the opening frame, Howard scored the first seven goals, capped off by goal from junior 
Josie Mallory (Charlottesville, Va.), assisted by graduate 
Alayah Hightower (Mitchellville, Md.).
 
After one, the Bison held a commanding 9-1 advantage.
 
Junior midfielder 
Heidi Chicas (Hyattsville, Md.) pushed the margin to double digits with eight minutes remaining before intermission, 11-1, and took a 12-2 lead at the break.
 
After halftime, the Firebirds struck first, but back-to-back goals from senior 
Sydney Saunders (Baltimore) extended the lead back to double digits, 14-3. Saunders finished with two goals and a pair of caused turnovers.
 
UDC closed out the contest scoring five unanswered goals, but Howard held off the late charge.
 
Juniors 
Madison Joines (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and 
Quai Skeete-Ridley (New Carrollton, Md.) recorded two goals apiece in the victory.
 
Saturday (Feb. 26), HU hosts American in a crosstown matchup at Greene Stadium. Match time is set for noon.
