Memphis, Tenn. (November 11, 2022) - Fresh off a hard-fought win over LaSalle on Monday, the Howard University women's basketball team will look to extend its streak when it travels to Memphis, TN to take on the Memphis Tigers at 1 pm on Saturday at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
In the season opener against the Explorers, the Bison relied on the scoring of the Big 2 in senior
Iyanna Warren and junior
Destiny Howell (5-11, JR, Queens, NY), and some tough defense against their opponent.
Warren, a 5-3 senior from Accokeek, MD, led all scorers with 18 points while also filling up the stat sheet with five rebounds and three assists.
Howell, who along with Warren are on the MEAC preseason first team, chipped in with 15 points.
"That is where experience comes into play," said Howard Head Coach
Ty Grace. "Iyanna did a good job of controlling the pace. She pushed it up the floor and challenged LaSalle on defense. When she wasn't going to the free-throw line (10-of-12), she was finding Destiny and you have to respect her because she is a shooter."
Always steady and reliable
Krislyn Marsh (6-0, GR, F, Houston, TX) added nine points and five rebounds. As much as the Bison relied on the duo for their scoring, it was the defense that the team played on LaSalle, known for its 3-point shooting propensity.
"I was really pleased with the way we closed out on their shooters," Coach Grace explained. "Krislyn and Brooklynn (Fort-Davis) did not score as much but the other things that they did on defense and their rebounding was critical. Again, that's where the experience comes in. They all understand that they may sometimes have to sacrifice part of their game to help us win. We had control of the game, but there were times that they made runs but we responded. This is a game that we may have lost control of last year."
Memphis (0-1) is coming off a 77-69 loss at home to Columbia on Monday. The Tigers were 16-12 last season and will be looking to get their first win. Last season, the Tigers outfought the Bison 56-50 at Burr.
"They are well coached and I am sure that they will be looking to get their first win at home," Grace observed. "It is going to be interesting to see how we respond after the first game."
Memphis is led by senior guard Madison Griggs who led her team with 18 in the opener and graduate guard Jamirah Shutes, who tallied 15 in a losing cause.
NEXT UP: Howard hosts George Washington on Monday at 7 pm in Burr.
