WASHINGTON (October 9, 2022) – Second-year Bison
Bryson Baker (Ellicott City, Md.) scored a pair of goals to help the Howard University men's soccer team secure a tie with reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Champions Long Island University (LIU), 2-2, at Greene Stadium.
With the stalemate, Howard moved to 1-1-1 in league play (2-7-1 overall) while LIU remains atop of the conference standings (9-2-1, 3-0-1 NEC).
LIU's Andre Puente put the Sharks ahead, 1-0, thanks to an assist from Robert Winkler.
Despite the Sharks taking more shots, 19-8, HU capitalized on its opportunities.
At the 34-minute mark, Baker broke away down the sideline and through defenders to tie the contest at one apiece before intermission.
After the break, the Maryland native took advantage of his penalty kick opportunity and gave the Bison a 2-1 edge at the 69-minute mark.
With 10 minutes remaining, Emil Jaaskelainen found the back of the cage with an assist from Matthias Heiland and forced the match into a tie.
Freshman goalkeeper
JR Gawel (St. Mary's, Md.) made spectacular saves throughout the contest, finishing with a match-leading eight stops.
Howard begins a brief two-match road trip to the Northeast part of the country, beginning Thursday (Oct. 13) at Stonehill College. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
