DURHAM, N.C. (October 4, 2022) – Howard University men's soccer team dropped a tough bout at No. 4 Duke, 2-0, in their final nonconference match of the season.
HU (2-7) hung tough throughout the contest, holding the explosive Blue Devils to a pair of goals.
At the 25-minute mark, Duke's Wayne Frederick, son of Howard University President
Wayne A. I. Frederick, scored and put the Blue Devils ahead at the break, 1-0.
In the second period, Howard kept Duke off the board until an unassisted goal by Jai Bean extended the lead with less than 30 minutes remaining, 2-0.
HU battled to the end but were unable to get a ball passed Duke's Eliot Hamill.
Second-year Bison
Bryson Baker (Ellicott City, Md.) led the attack with three shots. Reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week
Nigel McCloud (Fayetteville, Ga.) was held without a shot attempt in the setback.
Newcomer
JR Gawel (St. Mary's, Md.) held his own against the No. 4 team in the country, finishing with seven saves in a losing effort.
On Oct. 9, HU resumes league play versus LIU. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
